Currently, Non-EU citizens, including UK citizens, who have lived in Spain for over six months cannot use their driving license on Spanish roads. For certain countries It is allowed to exchange their license for a Spanish one. We advise these individuals who would like to make an exchange to schedule their "psicotecnico" medical aptitude test, which is required for exchanging their license. However, they will only have a six-month window after entering to the country to exchange it for a Spanish license.

 

The psicotecnico aptitude test is a medical examination that verifies whether an individual is physically and mentally fit to drive, as recognised by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT).

 

The test, as recommended, comprises an eye and hearing test, reflex and concentration tests, and evaluations of physical capacity, including respiratory function, motor skills, blood pressure, and other related assessments. A brief interview with a doctor may also be required.

 

If the individual passes the test, they will receive a medical certificate that confirms their fitness to drive, indicating that there is no physical or mental impediment to their driving ability.

 

Where Can I Take the Psicotecnico Aptitude Test for Driving in Spain?

The test can be taken at any DGT officially recognized health center. You can find the full list of health centers or just make an inquire in Google maps. In many locations, you will find a center located close to the local DGT office. While walk-ins are available, it is best to book in advance to ensure you can get the test done.

 

The test is said to take no longer than 15 minutes despite its extensive nature.

 

The current cost of the test is approximately 50 euros, although the precise cost and details of the test may vary among different clinics.

 

You will need to bring money to cover the cost of the test, your current driving license, and a form of identification recognized in Spain, such as your NIE, TIE card, or proof of residency.

 

Certificates are valid for three months, and if you fail, you can retake the test as many times as you need.
