Kitchen renovations are often done in houses since it is a space we spend a lot of time in. Whether you're buying an old flat or you've been in your house for many years, it's usually one of the first projects to consider.

The most common renovation requests include extending the kitchen into the living room, adding an island, updating water and electricity systems, changing the flooring and wall coverings, and replacing furniture and appliances. Are you curious about how much it would cost to renovate a kitchen in Spain? This post outlines what to consider when renovating your kitchen, and examines the factors that can increase costs as well as how you can save money.

What is the cost of a kitchen renovation in Spain?

The cost of renovations depends on your budget and the extent of changes you would like to make. A kitchen renovation can cost anywhere from €2,000 for a basic facelift to €15,000 or more if you want luxury. The average price for renovating an 7 m² kitchen is between €6,000 and €9,000. This fee covers demolition, debris removal, wall covering renovations, new furniture and appliance installation and facility remodeling.

What is included in the cost of renovation in Spain?

Remember that the costliest kitchen renovation will involve modifying main features or relocating the kitchen within the house. If you're living in an older building, a kitchen renovation offers the chance to replace gas or water pipes that may be worn out or no longer up to regulations, avoiding further issues. Investing in this, even if it increases the cost of the renovation, is worth it.

If we keep the kitchen in its current location and don't do a full renovation, things to factor into the budget for renovating the kitchen include:

  • The cost of labor may comprise 10-15% of the total budget. Renovating a kitchen requires the work of bricklayers, electricians, plumbers and carpenters. Contracting with a single renovation company to provide all services at a fixed cost is a more practical and cost-effective alternative to arranging for individual services.
  • Expenses will rise with the size of the kitchen, as more labor and resources will be necessary.
  • An increase of 20% in the cost of a kitchen renovation may be expected depending on the quality of fittings such as tile, cupboards, and appliances (e.g. tile may range from €8/m2 to €100/m2).
  • If you want to buy designer, branded furniture or appliances, it'll be more expensive compared to a private-label brand (e.g. a private refrigerator can cost €300 while luxury brands can cost over €1,000).

Strategies for reducing the cost of a kitchen remodel / renovation

Smart money-saving strategies can be applied when remodeling a kitchen.

You can do a quick and inexpensive remodel (like for a kitchen in a vacation home or rental apartment) without replacing any furniture. You can give your kitchen a modern makeover by sanding, painting, and adding new handles if it is in good condition.

You can save money by installing adhesive panels on the kitchen's front surfaces instead of replacing tiles, or laying a vinyl floor over the existing one.

To save money, restrict the use of tiles to just the work area and paint the other walls, which is a more economical option.

We can save money when selecting appliances too. Numerous brands offer appliances that provide good value for the money. As appliances become more energy-efficient, it will result in savings on your electricity bill.

If you are watching your expenses, here's what to prioritize investing in.

If you have additional funds for the kitchen renovation, prioritize your spending on the most integral aspects of the room.

  • When selecting a countertop for your kitchen, it's important to choose one that is durable and high-quality since it will be used often. Countertops are available in various materials and price points, including porcelain, granite, marble, Silestone, wood, and laminates.
  • Kitchens are tough on floors, so selecting materials that are stain-resistant, easy to clean, and non-slip are key considerations when choosing something that is also attractive.
  • With the right kitchen furniture, you can create a modern, classic, industrial, or nordic look. Not only should it be stylish, but it must also be functional, resistant to humidity and heat, and easy to clean. A variety of materials and prices are available, from synthetic laminates to lacquer furniture and natural wood.
  • Choose smart appliances that you can control from your mobile phone, and that are energy efficient. Over time, this will reduce your electricity bill.

To ensure a successful kitchen remodel, it is essential to thoroughly plan ahead and consider the work required, selecting experienced professionals who can give you advice and offer a fixed rate. By doing this you can make the most of your budget and enhance the kitchen's features. A well-done kitchen renovation may greatly increase your home's value, so don't forget this!
